Lofoten Photo Tour – Trip Report 2019 by Audun Lie Dahl

For the second time, our Lofoten photo tour in Arctic Norway gave us all what we asked for and so much more!

Winter in the northern hemisphere means short days for a landscape photographer and when you are in one of the most photogenic places on the planet, things just fall into place…

Picturesque and traditional fishing villages, sandy beaches, mighty mountains and Arctic lighting. These aspects all come together to form a vision of the Lofoten archipelago that could easily be found on a number of postcards. Add to this the stunning aurora borealis that puts on dancing display in the evenings, you’re guaranteed a landscape photography tour like no other!

We had 8 days on our Northern Lights photo tour to experience all these splendours but our photo tour commenced on a slightly bumpy note as the mother of all snowstorms hit the Lofoten Islands. Over 100cm of snow fell in a very short period and our van got stuck for over 10 hours while we waited for snow ploughs to clear the roads.

Nonetheless, once the storm passed, our Lofoten photography tour continued and we spent our days photographing snow and ice covered beaches and Arctic light draped mountains. At night, we would go out and wait for the northern lights to appear but when it comes to nature, nothing is ever a guarantee. This demonstration of nature happens when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earth’s magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere. These collisions result in countless little bursts of light, called photons, which make up the aurora, better known as the northern lights. Hence, we were at the mercy of the sun!

Seeing as the lights had a little bit of stage fright, we captured the milky way splashed across the night sky and held thumbs that the northern lights would appear and make it a successful photo tour.

Alas, the best things in life are worth waiting for as our last night yielded stunning views of the aurora borealis, perfectly composed with the island’s mountainous peaks and snow draped landscape.

It always a melancholy moment when a photo tour ends as one must say goodbye to new friends and leave a beautiful place but thankfully one will always have photo memories to look back on.
