In order to acclimatize properly we will make our way south, gaining altitude slowly, while visiting surreal locations. Our journey begins in and around the canyons of La Paz, then to Lake Titicaca, followed by a southwards venture to the Salar de Uyuni – one of the highlights of this trip!

These places will leave you breathless – not only due to the beauty but by the surreal light and spectacular landscapes comprising of contoured mountains, glacier-covered volcanoes and shimmering multi- colored lagoons full of pink flamingos.

Why this Photo Expedition is for You

Destination Allure

The Bolivian Altiplano is a natural beauty of rugged, raw and complex environments that has made it one of the world's most desired scenic destination to photograph. From Sol de Mañana’s boiling mud pits to the Salar de Uyuni; the world’s largest salt flat and the legacy of a prehistoric lake that went dry, there is no denying that the Bolivian Altiplano is surreal in every sense!

Our photo tour takes place during the winter season which yields the best time for a Bolivian Altiplano photo tour. Winter is the dry season in Bolivia, and the skies become the colours of sapphires whilst the landscape turns into a variety of colours that will entice you to no end.

Today is our first day of our Bolivia tour in La Paz in order to acclimatize at roughly 3,100m. After lunch at around 14:00, we will embark on a 4-hour city tour that is nestled deep in the heart of the Andes. We will visit the Calacoto neighbourhood and visit some open-air markets, the colonial neighbourhoods and we will also head into the canyon of La Paz which offers spectacular views of Mt Illimani.

Day 2: La Paz

The acclimatization process continues today on our Bolivia tour and weather depending, our plan is to head towards the Andes and explore some nearby eroded canyons and get closer the mountains from a high vantage point. Lunch will be en-route while visiting look out points and we will head to a locale that is perfectly positioned to catch the sunset on the Cordillera Real peaks.

Day 3: Lake Titicaca

Our plan for the day is to visit the jewel of the Andes, Lake Titicaca. Known as the birthplace of the Incas, its beautiful blue waters – the highest navigable lake in the world at 3,810m, also boasts fabulous views of the Cordillera Real mountain range and ancient agriculture terraces. With such magnificent splendour in ample supply, a number of viewpoints will be incorporated throughout our day in the vicinity. In the afternoon, we will head to back to La Paz and relax at the hotel and have dinner together.

Day 4: La Paz to Tahua

Today on our Bolivia tour we will leave La Paz and head south across the Altiplano, passing the mining city of Oruro en-route to the Salar de Uyuni. Lunch will be in Challapata before heading southwest to the northern edge of the Salar de Uyuni until we reach the village of Tahua, which is nestled below Mt. Thunupa, an extinct multi-colored volcano (5,430 m). The plan is to arrive in time for sunset over the expansive salt flats.

Day 5: Salar de Uyuni & Islands

This morning is an early start on our Bolivia tour as we depart for the edge of Salar de Uyuni for sunrise photography session, after which we will return to the hotel for breakfast. Our morning will be spent editing images or relaxing at the hotel before heading to Isla Pescado in the afternoon to catch the sunset across the salt flats.

Day 6: Salar de Uyuni, Uyuni to Villa Mar

After another sunrise session this morning, our Bolivia tour continues as we head south east towards Incahuasi Island and the town of Uyuni. We will visit a train graveyard before stopping for lunch. After lunch, we continue south to San Cristobal and to the village of Villa Mar where we will stop at the City of Stone lava canyons and a hidden lake for sunset before arriving at our hotel for dinner.

Day 7: Villa Mar - Laguna Colorada - Sol de Mañana - Ojo de Perdiz

We will rise early to catch the sunrise at Laguna Colorada, which is quite magical with plentiful photo opportunities. Once the golden hour lighting has dissipated, we will head to Sol de Mañana’s boiling mud pits, which is a surreal landscape!
Lunch will be en-route and we return to Laguna Colorada in time for the sunset for another photography session. After which, we will make our way to our hotel in the Siloli Desert for dinner.

Day 8: Ojo de Perdiz - Laguna Hedionda - Ollague - Alota – Uyuni
