Borneo is the world’s third largest island and conjures up images of a wild forest paradise where Orangutans, gibbons and colourful birds roam the Bornean jungle. On our Borneo photography tour, we will visit some of Borneo’s most famous wildlife sites including Sepilok, the Kinabatangan River, Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Danum Valley – the latter protecting a piece of one of the oldest and tallest tropical rainforests in the world!

A rich mix of highly sought-after mammals and birds can be expected on this trip, and we have designed this fabulous tour to maximize time in the best areas. Our main photographic targets will include Bornean Pygmy Elephant, Bornean Orangutan and several smaller species of primate including Proboscis Monkey, Red Leaf Monkey, Bornean Gibbon and the adorable Western Tarsier, Leopard Cat and various other predators, with a chance even for the gorgeous Sunda Clouded Leopard, and rainforest birds.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Visit some of the most famous wildlife sites in Borneo including Sepilok, the Kinabatangan River, Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Danum Valley. These areas are some of the oldest and tallest tropical rainforests in the world!

Month of Travel

Our photo safari takes place in April and May, which is prime time to visit Sabah in Malaysian Borneo as drier conditions at this time of year are more conductive to wildlife photography and viewing when compared to the wetter months on the island.

Borneo is famed for its rainforest wildlife and memorable photographic experiences may include interactions with Bornean Orangutan, Bornean Pygmy Elephant, the long bulbous-nosed Probosics Monkey, Red Leaf Monkey, Bornean Gibbon and possibly even the adorable Western Tarsier, while appealing bird species include colourful kingfishers, broadbills and mighty rainforest hornbills.

Day 1: Arrival in Kota Kinabalu

Today is set aside as an arrival day for our Borneo photo tour in Kota Kinabalu (often referred to as “KK” by locals) – the provincial capital of Sabah, Malaysian Borneo and a modern city that will act as our springboard to exploring a piece of the world’s third largest island.

Day 2: Flight from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, visit Rainforest Discovery Centre and Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary

Today on our Borneo photography tour we have an early morning start as we fly out of KK bound for Sandakan. After arrival, we will pay a visit to one of Sepilok’s most acclaimed assets, which is its fantastic canopy walkway that stretches for about 500m through the high forest canopy of the reserve’s lowland rainforest. In the afternoon, we will visit the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary which should allow us excellent photographic opportunities of these interesting primates!

Day 3: Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to Kinabatangan River

This morning on our Borneo photography tour we will head to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Afterwards, we hop onto a boat and head for Sukau and our wonderful lodge.

Day 4: Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Cave

Superb rainforest wildlife is to be seen along the extensive riparian forests on the Kinabatangan River at Sukau. This concentration of wildlife is phenomenal, so we will spend our time on the Kinabatangan River and its black-water tributaries in small motorized boats. These boat trips are simply amazing as one is able to creep up quietly and get close to both mammals and birds. The afternoon sees us travelling to the massive limestone Gomantong Caves where an estimated 2 million bats and 1 million swiftlets (of four species) make their home.

Day 5: Kinabatangan River

We have a further day in the area to cruise the river and photograph its fantastic wildlife.

Day 7: Tabin Wildlife Reserve

Tabin Wildlife Reserve is one of the richest in Sabah in terms of wildlife and birds, and all 8 species of Hornbills found in Borneo occur here (Helmeted, Wreathed, Wrinkled, White-crowned, Malaysian Pied, Bushy-crested, Black and Rhinoceros). Rhinoceros Hornbills are Malaysia’s national bird and are large and impressive creatures with handsome black and white plumage and ivory coloured bills with a curving red and yellow casque!

Day 8: Tabin Wildlife Reserve via Lahad Datu to Danum Valley

Today on our photo safari we will drive on bumpy dirt tracks and navigate river crossings to access the vast primary forest of the Danum Valley Conservation Area that protects some of the last remaining pristine lowland rainforest on the island.

Days 9 to 11: Danum Valley

Our rainforest lodge, situated along the banks of the Danum River, allows us access to work our way through the diverse and often muddy trails to search for mammals. A major attraction to this reserve is the fantastic canopy walkway that allows unique access to the little-known canopy world of Borneo’s rainforest lowlands.

Day 12: Danum Valley to Lahad Datu, flight to Kota Kinabalu

After a final morning in the Danum Valley, we will transfer to Lahad Datu for a flight transfer to Kota Kinabalu where we will overnight.

Day 13: Kota Kinabalu and depart

This morning our magical Borneo photography tour will conclude after breakfast as we are transferred to the airport for departure.
