Botswana is a country that is home to some of Africa’s great wildlife areas. Botswana boasts such vast areas of land devoted to ecotourism, and on this photo safari, we will visit two such famous areas: Savute and Okavango Delta’s Khwai concession. These are contrasting areas – the Savute is a land of grassy plains, small pans and vast broad-leaved woodlands, while the Khwai is home to tall woodlands, floodplains and lagoons. These areas of land recognised as offering superior wildlife numbers and sightings, as well as some of the finest game viewing in Africa.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Northern Botswana is home to an intriguing geographical feature that has resulted in the montage of wetland, savanna, woodland and water that is the Okavango Delta. We will visit two different areas in the region for a mix of interesting interactions and photographic opportunities.

Month of Travel

We have specifically designed this African photo safari at the start of summer, when game viewing is typically excellent. Winter has passed, and temperatures rise quickly during the months of September and October, which sees both predator and prey congregating around waterholes.

Botswana is a photo safari destination par excellence that offers an incredible wilderness experience and plays host to some of the finest locations for photography of Africa’s wildlife. Photograph Lion, Spotted Hyena, Elephant, Leopard, African Wild Dog, Cheetah, Cape Buffalo and other treasures in this wildlife saturated area.

Day 1: Arrival in Maun, flight to Savute

Today this fabulous Botswana photo safari will begin as we depart Maun and fly on scheduled flight into Chobe National Park to the Savute area.

Days 2 to 4: Savute

The Savute is located in north-eastern Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and its status as an incredible wildlife destination was cemented by documentaries detailing the local Lion and Spotted Hyaena interactions, and then the drying up, and years later, re-emergence of the Savute Channel as water started to flow down its serpentine length and into the Savute Marsh. The Savute is renowned for its huge numbers of Elephant that come to the scattering of pans to quench their thirst. And then, of course, there are the predators. Lions are commonly seen, with two prides dominant here – the North Pride and the Marsh Pride. The latter renowned as the “Elephant killers”. Whilst Leopard are shy, these beautiful creatures are seen fairly regularly, as too are Cheetah and the endangered apex predator, the African Wild Dog..

Day 5: Flight from Savute to Khwai

Leaving the Savute early this morning on our Botswana photo safari, we fly to the edge of the Okavango Delta, which is one of Africa’s most acclaimed wildlife areas. With four nights in this game rich area, we have a lot to look forward to!

Days 6 to 8: Khwai

The Khwai area is legendary as being home to a high density of predators and has recently earned a strong reputation as being one of the best game areas in Botswana, with healthy populations of with Roan and Sable antelope, Cape Buffalo, Plains Zebra, Giraffe and Elephant herds, and with predators in the form of Lion, Leopard, Spotted Hyaena, and African Wild Dog.

Day 9: Flight from Khwai to Maun and depart

After a final morning drive and breakfast, we make our way fly out of Khwai for Maun, where this incredible Botswana photo safari sadly comes to an end!

We had an absolutely marvelous trip away with Penny, she taught and guided gently with our new cameras so much. The trip was just right, great lodges, driver guides and the beasties and birds were on show or gently coached into view.
Thank you to the whole Oryx team for a terrific tour and to Penny especially for her skills with the camera and helping us get started with new eyes for the shot.

Penny, I really had a fantastic holiday in Botswana thanks to you and ORYX team for sure! I am still on a bit of a high. Even though this was my third time to Southern Africa and second to Botswana, and each trip has been special, this time having a focus was brilliant and your guidance was invaluable to achieving some excellent photos.

My wife and I had an incredible safari experience with the ORYX team. From booking process to the preparations made by the ORYX team we were well taken care of. The safari itself was full of unique sightings and great photographic opportunities. Penny Robartes (our ORYX guide) provided expertise in the sightings along with key information to improve capturing the best possible photos. The safari itself is brilliantly set up with distinct environments with Savute up first and finishing with Khwai. The Savute location is dryer with game concentrated around watering holes and marsh to the north. The Savute was dominated with lion sightings including the Marsh pride with cubs. The tracker was able to use tracks in the sand to find the lion cubs with an eventual greeting of the cubs and the adults capping off that incredible sighting. Khwai is a lush and green river front with an entirely different back drop and more unique animal sightings. Khwai did not disappoint with wild dogs, hippos, crocs, owls, and lots of great leopard sightings. Even though we had very good leopard sightings in the Savute, the leopard sightings in Khwai were unique. We were able to see a leopard chase down a Lechwe in the marsh splashing its way to knocking down the the Lechwe. Again, the tracker was able to find a leopard from the tracks in the sand. That leopard ended up with a kill and our opportunity to see it climb the tree with its kill right in front of us with the right angle and sun behind us. Penny provided instruction and what to expect from the animal behavior to capture the best possible emotion in the images.

Thanks again ORYX team for an incredible safari.
