Ethiopia is undoubtedly one of Africa’s most productive and rewarding photographic destinations, with awe-inspiring scenery, photogenic and approachable mammals and birds, plus some striking ancient buildings and cultures making this a photographer’s dream! With a focus on the special mammals of the Bale and Simien mountains – both hotspots for endemic wildlife – this combination of these two distant mountainous areas offers a chance to capture some of the most outstanding natural wonders of Ethiopia.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Capture the breath-taking Afro-alpine landscape found in the Bale and Simien mountains, both renowned for their vast escarpments, moors, lakes and mountain streams.

Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa

Today is set as an arrival day for our Ethiopian photo safari with an overnight stay in the capital, Addis Ababa.
2

Day 2: Fly to Awassa and drive to Bale Mountains

This morning we fly to Awassa, a town located in the Great Rift Valley. We will be collected from the airport, and will then embark on the drive to the Bale Mountains. *Please note this itinerary may change pending accommodation availability

Days 3 to 5: Bale Mountains National Park

Our main photographic target here will be the plateau’s most celebrated resident, the Ethiopian or Simien Wolf, crowned with the unfortunate title of “the world’s rarest canid.” This is an area of high-altitude plateau that is broken by numerous spectacular volcanic plugs and peaks, beautiful alpine lakes and rushing mountain streams that descend into deep rocky gorges on their way to the lowlands below. The Bale Mountains contains three distinct eco-regions: the northern plains, bush and woods; the central Sanetti Plateau, with an average elevation of over 4000 metres; and the southern Harenna Forest, known for its mammals, amphibians and birds. The Bale area has many endemics including the huge Mountain Nyala, which was the last large antelope species to discovered in Africa (only in 1910) and Bale Monkey, which is generally found in bamboo zones in the Harenna Forest.

Day 6: Drive to Awassa and fly to Addis Ababa

Today we leave the Bale Mountains, driving over the Sanetti Plateau and back to the capital, where we will overnight.
5

Day 7: Flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar, drive to Simien Mountains

This morning we have an early flight to Gondar. After arrival in Gondar we will meet our drivers and depart for the Simien Mountains, where we will overnight.
6

Days 8 to 10: Simien Mountains National Park

The next three days will be spent exploring and photographing the legendary Simien Mountains and its unique inhabitants. The spectacular highlands are a haven for endemic species and our photographic targets here are without a doubt the magnificent Walia Ibex and incredible Gelada.
7

Day 11: Simien Mountains to Gondar

After a final excursion photographing Geladas, we will return to Gondar. This, the “Camelot of Ethiopia”, is a city noted for its many medieval castles and the design and decoration of its churches. We will spend the day touring the various historical buildings found here.
8

Day 12: Flight Gondar to Addis Ababa and depart

This morning we depart Gondar, flying back to Addis Ababa where our photo tour will sadly come to an end.
