Life of Predators

Our days will be dedicated the the predators of the Mara, and there are certainly a lot of them around! With the annual wildebeest migration having ended a few months prior, the predators are hungry. With new life around in terms of plains game calfs and foals, as well as predators young, the opportunities are truly varied and potentially action-filled!

Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi and transfer to accommodation

Today is an arrival day in the Kenyan capital for the start of our African photo safari

Day 2: Scheduled flight from Wilson to Masai Mara National Park

This morning we will be transferred to Wilson Airport, where after we catch a scheduled flight to the Musiara Airstrip located in the Masai Mara National Park. Upon arrival at the airstrip, our guides will collect us and take us on our first photo safari game drive as we slowly make our way to the Camp. After check-in and lunch, we will depart on our long awaited first afternoon game drive on our Kenya photography tour. Our camp is specifically chosen for its superb location. Besides the natural beauty that surrounds it, such as overlooking the spectacular Mara River, this area also offers a very high concentration of wildlife activity found in the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Day 3: Masai Mara National Park

The next day spent on our Kenya photo safari in the Masai Mara National Park will either be full-days out in the field, or broken up into morning and afternoon game drives depending on the heat of the day. As we will be taking exclusive use of the Camp, we have complete freedom to choose as each new day arrives. The benefit of full-days out in the field during our Kenya photography tour and not having to return to camp for meals enables us to explore some of the areas further away from camp, otherwise inaccessible.

Day 4: Road transfer to Mara North Conservancy, Masai Mara

After breakfast, our photo safari continues as we road transfer to the Mara North Conservancy for 3 nights, where our camp is found on the banks of the Mara River. Ranging from secret knots of woodland to wide open plains, to caches of rocks and boulders, to flat expanses of vastness, edged by sharp inclines of escarpment, the Mara North Conservancy leaves nothing to be desired.   This variation in landscape provides ample opportunities to capture the diversity that makes this ecosystem so desirable to its wildlife.

Days 5 to 6: Mara North Conservancy

As with our stay in the Mara, the next two days on Kenya photography tour will either be full-days out in the field, or broken up into morning and afternoon game drives. The Mara North Conservancy is exclusive and private, which means that only guests and lodges/camps that are based in this area are able to traverse it. Although there is a conservation fee such as what you pay upon entering the Maasai Mara National Reserve, it is not opened to the public unless you are a guest at one of the Mara North Conservancy lodges/camps. Along with the intimacy and exclusivity as mentioned above, the Mara North Conservancy takes it a step further by offering the sheer freedom of off-road driving as well as night-driving. This powerful combination is the perfect scenario for wildlife photographers as we can drive directly to the sightings that interest you!

Day 7: Scheduled flight from Masai Mara National Park to Wilson

After our final morning photo safari game drive and breakfast, we will sadly depart the Masai Mara for Wilson Airport in Nairobi. We will stop for lunch at one of the beautiful restaurants en-route to Jomo Kenyata International Airport where we will say good-bye and board our international flights.

Fabulous trip, well organised, with great accommodations and locales. We saw numerous mammals & birds with the help of our skilled local guides, who were also very well informed & helpful. Our tour leader and photographer Penny Robartes was excellent – I learned a lot from Penny about photography and took some of the best photos I have ever taken. All in all, this was an excellent trip and will certainly look to undertake further trips with ORYX!

I have had a fantastic trip!! The time with Penny and the group based out of Nkorombo in the park was excellent. Penny’s blend of skills of leadership, organizing, people, and photography coaching all came together to make the trip a rewarding learning experience for all.

Now a few thousand photos to distill down, and I am optimistic that there are a few diamonds to be found in there.

And also starting to look at future trips, with Oryx, Penny, and various Serian camps all being part of the recommended mix.

The trip was beyond expectations. The staff was excellent and careful and they accommodated everyone's food issues. The drivers and guides were very savvy about photography. They positioned the jeep at each stop to take advantage of the light and the movement of the animal we were photographing. They were willing to stop for birds even though birds were not the focus of the trip. I am really looking forward to another ORYX trip. Penny was so excellent. I would travel with her again in a heartbeat.
