Why this Photo Safari is for You

Visit Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, a land of mythical forests, volcanoes and gentle giants, undoubtedly one of the world’s most thrilling wildlife experiences.

The sheer size of these gentle Giants is enough to make ones heart skip a beat and at first they appear to be very intimidating, but once the youngsters start with their antics, nerves will give way to laughter. Years of habituation means that these animals show very little interest in their human spectators, especially the big Silverbacks.

Travel to this beautiful location with like-minded individuals and share your photographic bucket list together.

Day 1: Arrival Kigali

After arrival at Kigali International Airport, clearing passport control and collecting baggage, you will be met by an ORYX representive who will be transfer you to Serena Kigali for your overnight stay. On an enchanting boulevard in the heart of Kigali, Rwanda, in a secure location just a five-minute walk from the CBD, lies Kigali Serena Hotel. A distinctively rich blend of Rwandan heritage, art and culture with contemporary 5-star comfort in 148 sophisticated rooms and suites, Serena Kigali provides a private and peaceful retreat like no other for discerning international diplomats and executives.

Day 2: Road transfer from Kigali to Volcanoes National Park

Following breakfast and at a time to be advised we will do a tour of the Genocide memorial (approximately one and a half hours). This educational tour will answer all questions you may have on the tragedy that had befallen Rwanda in 1994 and make you more so appreciate where this amazing little country finds itself today. Hereafter you will depart Kigali by road transfer (approximately two and a half hour journey) on a very scenic tour through this clean green country to Volcanoes National Park, your base for the duration of your stay in Rwanda. On arrival at Bisate Lodge we will be met with friendly smiles, and a refreshing welcome drink before we are shown to our accommodations. Tonight, before dinner and at a time agreed upon, we will meet in the lounge for a talk on Mountain Gorilla trekking in preparation for the following day.

Day 3: Volcanoes National Park – Gorilla Trek I

After a delicious 6am breakfast, we will set off for a short drive to the National Park Headquarters where we will receive a quick briefing on the upcoming Gorilla trek. Thereafter, we will likely have a short drive to the closest point to the specific Gorilla family we have been allocated to. It is customary for us to hire a local porter who will carry participant’s backpacks and assist on the trek itself. This is a great initiative to support the local community and the porters prove themselves invaluable when your trek turns out longer than expected. Upon reaching the park boundary, our park guide will give us a short briefing on walking etiquette inside the National Park.bistate lodge bistate lodge The scenic and refreshing hike is set at our own comfortable pace with plenty of stops and photo opportunities. During these stops, our park guide will share some of their knowledge and answer any questions we may have. Once we reach the armed trekkers, who guard each Gorilla family, we will leave behind our porter, backpack and walking stick. No food or water from this point on! Shooting off 600 to 1000 images in the allocated one hour visit with the Gorillas is not uncommon! These are highly intelligent creatures and this is evident in the way in which they communicate and go about their daily routine. An initial perceived look of intimidation from the dominant Silverback soon turns into an incredible emotional connection. In the afternoon, if time and weather permits, we will take a short one hour drive to a beautiful viewpoint, beneath which lies two scenically spectacular lakes (known locally as Two Lakes”) and here we will have opportunities to photograph the landscapes of Rwanda, including spectacular vistas across the Volcanoes National Park.

Day 4: AM Gorilla Trek II Pm road transfer to Kigali (Kigali Serena)

Following the same routine as yesterday, we will once again hike into the National Park and spend a magical hour with another group of assigned gorillas. The 2nd experience is usually more magical than the first, as now you will be more comfortable around these incredible animals. After our Gorilla trek we will head to back to the lodge to freshen up and check out, before driving back to Kigali for our overnight stay.

Days 5 : PM Transfer to Kigali Airport, Fly to Addis Ababa (Sheraton Hotel)

After a morning at leisure, or further exploration of the city of Kigali, we will transfer back to Kigali International Airport for your flight to your final destination of choice.

Quite simply, my trip to Africa was the best 14 days of my life. Every detail of the journey was flawlessly executed by ORYX and I can’t thank them enough for their expertise and ability to arrange all of the details to perfection. I would recommend them to anyone who is looking to experience Africa in the way it was truly intended… And I’m thrilled to have found the perfect company to plan all of my future trips, and wouldn’t dream of going elsewhere.

“The trip was awesome – the whole family really loved it! As for Greg himself, he was a total hit! Greg is another level. So very happy he could join us, and I doubt it will be the last time either. He certainly helped me out a lot, and also had incredible patience with my mum & sister who were beginners.

Thanks so much for organizing this for us – ill definitely give ORYX a shout for our next safari.”

I had a super time and lots of fun with Dale and Marius but I do need to thank Nicolette and Kirsty for answering all of my questions in such a prompt and efficient manner. Their emails were always informative and cheerful. Ethiopia and Rwanda are not the easiest locations so the support was much appreciated. In fact without it I probably would not have travelled with ORYX. I look forward to another ORYX tour at some point in the future. Fondest regards and, again, many thanks!

We share such deep gratitude to you, Marius and everyone at ORYX for arranging such a memorable, remarkable trip recently to S. Africa, Kenya and Rwanda…absolutely first class! You all made our trip so painless with all the personal touches!

Also, big thanks for the shirts and caps! We’ll wear them with pride! Justin, John and Soddy were just delightful guides who made us feel like “royalty”, and were so informative!

Perhaps someday we’ll be able to arrange another trip through ORYX. Meanwhile, be well, and know you are all doing phenomenal work!
With extreme gratitude!
