In Norway’s farthest northeastern corner, where hard rock meets the Barents Sea, where Norwegian culture meets Sami and Finnish cultures, lies a unique area that is known as the world’s easiest accessible Arctic birding destination.

Spring is the time when both wintering and breeding birds meet in Varanger, as the first migrants return from their wintering grounds.

On this bird photography tour we will cruise around the island of Hornøya in search of well renowned species including the Puffin, Razorbill, European Shag, Guillemot, Kittiwake and sea ducks. This is also prime time for raptors and the Hornøya bird cliff is a favoured hunting ground for both White-tailed Eagles and Gyrfalcon. On our photography tour we will also take advantage of the grand landscapes that drape the coastline of this Arctic peninsula.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Hornøya is the jewel in Varanger’s natural crown; a wild island inhabited by thousands of seabirds, hunted by eagles and protected as a nature reserve since 1983. With a staggering number of seabirds that cover the island, their daily lives are on display before you, giving you a front row seat to a live theatre displaying the raw beauty of nature.

Month of Travel

Our photo tour takes place during Spring when both wintering and breeding birds meet in Varanger.

Photographic opportunities

The bird life found here is a melting pot of various species and we will focus our time by travelling to the Hornøya bird cliffs, which houses over 100,000 nesting birds during the breeding season.

Norway’s most easterly point is a bird photography tour dream as it plays host to bird cliffs teeming with activity. With so many birds in one area, there is no shortage of action. Weather in Northern Norway can be rough, which means our itinerary will be flexible pertaining to the weather conditions. Each day after an excursion to Hornøya, weather depending, we will make our way back to Vardø for dinner at the hotel, to catch up on the day’s events, as well as to shift through our collection of images. During the trip we will also offer two unique snorkeling sessions with the sea birds, giving you an even further unique photography experience!
