Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

MalaMala Game Reserve is a sought-after destination for all wildlife photography enthusiasts, as the variety and density of wildlife is superb and many predators are well habituated. This allows guests to spend quality time with interesting subjects and capture amazing images.

Photographic Subjects

The Sabi Sands is world-renown for its incredible Big 5 sightings, most notably of its rosetted cat, the alluring Leopard! Many, being habituated, are very relaxed, and encounters with these cats are thus very sought-after. MalaMala is also superb for Lion, and African Wild Dog even Cheetah can be encountered here.

Private Vehicle

Limited to only 4 participants with an open & private safari vehicle for the duration of the photo tour.

Month of Travel

With the passing of winter and the end of spring, conditions are dry and hot, with water sources scarce, which in turn makes wildlife movements more predictable. Large numbers of animals, both predator and prey, will be along the banks of the Sand River. Depending on early summer rains, this period can bring forth some of the most exciting wildlife encounters in close proximity to the camps and the Sand River.

Guided Experience

ORYX Photo Tour Leader Daniel Bailey was MalaMala Game Reserve's specialist photographic ranger for more than 7 years, and his local knowledge of the region, and its wildlife, is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience.

Days 2 to 5: MalaMala Game Reserve

No other destination can compete with the photographic opportunities on offer at MalaMala. The reserve is famous for predator sightings, especially of Leopard! MalaMala’s Leopards are so accustomed to the safari vehicles that they hardly take any notice of them, even when hunting. Lion and Spotted Hyaena are common, often attempting to pirate kills from the many Leopards that have territories along the Sand River. Aside from these species, the reserve often produces Cheetah sightings, and the sought after African Wild Dog is often recorded on the property. What sets MalaMala apart is that ability to photograph in twilight and into the first hours of darkness, allowing one to capture evocative images of predators in the environment that they feel most at home in – the darkness.
