South Georgia Photo Expedition 2023

South Georgia Photo Expedition 2023

US$12,995 - US$16,995 per person sharing

Waitlist Open

21 Oct 2023 – 4 Nov 2023

South Georgia is one of the wildlife “jewels” of the South Atlantic Ocean, and has been dubbed “the most staggering wildlife show on earth”, a title that seems completely appropriate when marvelling at a colony of 500,000 King Penguins! This seldom-visited corner of the planet is traditionally only visited for three or four days as part of a much longer itinerary that focusses on Antarctica. We are therefore delighted to offer a photographic expedition that promises nine days on the island, with the focus on penguins, seabirds, seals and landscapes.

This tour is timed to coincide with the arrival of spring, when the wildlife residents are active and the landscapes should be pristine with white backdrops from winter’s snow. Zodiac boats will be utilised to get ashore or when searching for the wildlife at sea, and we will be taking advantage of the best lighting conditions for picture perfect moments!

Day 4: First landing in South Georgia

After two full days at sea, today promises to be very exciting as we are scheduled to make our first landing on South Georgia! As the island comes into sight, we will be greeted by the sight of snow-covered peaks (there are 11 peaks on South Georgia over 2,000 metres above sea level). The highly experienced expedition crew will be at hand to assist with identifications and of course, offer expert advice on everything relating to photography!

Days 5 to 12: South Georgia

Over the course of the next 8 days, we will exploring this wildlife heaven, visiting some of the most notable wildlife hotspots on the island. What sets this expedition apart from “standard” expeditions to South Georgia is that this one is focused on photography, thus landings will be timed so that guests get to photograph in the best light conditions. Highlights of our time in the area include a visit to the legendary Salisbury Plain, which is renowned for its staggering numbers of King Penguin – thought to be around half a million during breeding time. It is an incredible place indeed, and is said to harbour more wildlife per unit area than any place on earth! We can also expect to see Antarctic Fur and Southern Elephant seals, as well as skuas and giant petrels close in attendance. This truly is a place like no other!

Day 15: Return back to Port Stanley, the Falkland Islands and depart

Today is scheduled as our arrival day back at Port Stanley, and after arrival, we will disembark and this wondrous expedition will sadly come to an end.  **Please note that as South Georgia is one of the most isolated islands in the Southern hemisphere, our final expedition schedule will be in accordance with prevailing weather and ice conditions**
