Svalbard – Classic Photo Expedition II 2024

US$12,495 - US$12,995 per individual

Fully Booked

14 July 2024 – 24 July 2024

With towering snowcapped mountains, forbidding glaciers and flower-studded tundra, it is here where the formidable Polar Bear reigns as the apex predator and we hope to capture these white bears on the drifting ice sprinkled across the ocean. The ice situation at this time of year normally allows us to explore the north-eastern parts of the archipelago and we hope to capture other iconic Arctic mammals such as Walruses, Arctic Fox, various seals and whales. Bird photography is nothing short of spectacular, and the more special species include Ivory Gull, King Eider, Puffin and vast colonies of breeding Guillemots. Zodiac trips will be incorporated to get closer to wildlife, the ice and glaciers as we explore this unforgettable destination on our Svalbard photography tour

Day 1: Departure from Longyearbyen

Our Svalbard photography tour begins at the richly historical former mining town of Longyearbyen and we will embark on the expedition ship in the late afternoon.
2

Days 2 to 5: Searching for Polar Bears and Walruses

Heading toward the ice, we will start searching for Polar Bears and Walruses. Depending on the ice conditions this will be north of Spitsbergen or in the Nordaustlandet, and will continue our search eastwards towards Storøya.
3

Day 6: Sailing south toward Bråsvellbreen and into Hinlopen

Today our Svalbard photography tour will today take us into Hinlopen, best known for the hundreds of thousands of breeding Brunnich’s Guillemots, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Black Guillemots. Additionally, we will search for the Polar Bears and Walruses that are sometimes seen on drifting ice in the area.
4

Days 7 to 9: Liefdefjorden (Monaco Glacier)

The Monaco Glacier (alternatively known as Monacobreen) is a spectacular glacier that debouches out of Liefdefjorden. It is an impressive site and we will use our zodiac boats to get as close as possible. Its coastal plain offers a great area to spot Polar Bears that frequent the area to hunt for Ringed Seals or feed on bird’s eggs. Our Svalbard photo tour then sees us routing to Lilliehööksfjorden and Kongsfjorden, renowned for its landscapes, birds and seals
5

Day 10: Sailing south to Prins Karls Forland, afternoon at Alkehornet, and then through to Longyearbyen

Today is the penultimate day of our Svalbard photography tour. While at the Prins Karls Forland area we will be keeping a look out for Walrus and visit Alkehornet, where towing cliffs rise impressively out of surrounding plain, and is famous as a nesting site for Fulmars and Kittiwakes. This is also a great area for Arctic Fox and Svalbard Reindeer.
6

Day 11: Disembark from the ship Longyearbyen and depart

Having arrived at Longyearbyen in the middle last night, we will this morning be disembarking as our incredible photography expedition sadly comes to an end!   *Please note: This itinerary is a guideline only, and the program is dependent on weather, ice conditions and wildlife.
