Svalbard – Ice Lover Photo Expedition II 2025

US$10,495 - US$10,995 per individual

2 Spaces Available

10 June 2025 – 18 June 2025

With towering snowcapped mountains, forbidding glaciers and flower-studded tundra, it is here where the formidable Polar Bear reigns as the apex predator and we hope to capture these white bears on the drifting ice sprinkled across the ocean. The ice situation at this time of year normally allows us to explore the north-eastern parts of the archipelago and we hope to capture other iconic Arctic mammals such as Walruses, Arctic Fox, various seals and whales. Bird photography is nothing short of spectacular, and the more special species include Ivory Gull, King Eider, Puffin and vast colonies of breeding Guillemots. Zodiac trips will be incorporated to get closer to wildlife, the ice and glaciers as we explore this unforgettable destination on our Svalbard photography tour

1

Day 1: Departure from Longyearbyen

Our Svalbard photography tour begins at the richly historical former mining town of Longyearbyen and we will embark on the expedition ship in the late afternoon.
2

Days 2 to 3: Heading toward the ice, searching for Polar bears, Walruses, and seals.

Heading toward the ice, we will start searching for Polar Bears and Walruses. Depending on the ice conditions this will be north of Spitsbergen or in the Hinlopen Strait. Polar Bears are at home both on land and in the water and have been known to swim across 70km of water, a remarkable feat indeed!
3

Day 4: Sailing south through Hinlopen

Our journey will today take us through Hinlopen, the strait that separates the islands of Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. This area is best for the hundreds of thousands of breeding Brunnich's Guillemots (Thick-billed Murre) at Alkefjellet. There are often thousands of Black-legged Kittiwakes and Black Guillemots in the area as well. Additionally, we will search for the Polar Bears and Walruses that are sometimes seen on drifting ice in the area.
4

Days 5: Liefdefjorden (Monaco Glacier)

The Monaco Glacier (alternatively known as Monacobreen) is a spectacular glacier that debouches out of Liefdefjorden. It is an impressive site and we will use our zodiac boats to get as close as possible. Its coastal plain offers a great area to spot Polar Bears that frequent the area to hunt for Ringed Seals or feed on bird’s eggs. Our Svalbard photo tour then sees us routing to Lilliehööksfjorden and Kongsfjorden, renowned for its landscapes, birds and seals
5

Day 6: Sailing North-western corner of Spitsbergen

This section of Spitsbergen is replete with beautiful mountains and glaciers, and as we appreciate the incredible scenery (and snap a few well-timed pictures!), we will be keeping a look out for some of the local wildlife on the ice.
6

Day 7: Kongsfjorden

Having covered some good ground, we will find ourselves in Kongsfjorden, which is renowned for its landscapes, birds, and seals.
7

Day 8: Kong Karls Forland, then back to Longyearbyen (arrival roughly midnight)

Today is the penultimate day of our expedition. While at Kong Karls Forland area we will be keeping a look out for Walrus. We will also visit Alkehornet (this is the northern entrance of Isfjorden), where towing cliffs rise impressively out of surrounding plain, and which is famous as a nesting site for Fulmars and Kittiwakes.
8

Day 9: Disembark from the ship Longyearbyen and depart

When we awake this morning, we will be in Longyearbyen, having arrived the previous evening. We will then say our goodbyes as we disembark from the M/S Virgo and this once-in-a-lifetime adventure sadly comes to an end! Please note: This itinerary is a guideline only, and the program is dependent on weather, ice conditions and wildlife.
