ORYX Photo Tours are proud to present a photo safari to the Lamai area of the Serengeti.

 

The remote Lamai region is nestled in the northern region of the Serengeti National Park, a World Heritage Site, and offers striking topography scenery and excellent wildlife photographic opportunities.

 

Perfectly positioned to witness the Great Migration, our camp is a mere stone’s throw away from river crossings, and our Tanzania photo tour which will focus on these crossings as herds of wildebeest attempt to cross the Mara River in dramatic fashion.

 

This Serengeti photo safari will emulate an “Out of Africa” experience and potentially holds breath-taking scenes and action packed moments for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike.

 

Why this Photo Safari is for You

Crossings

September sees the Wildebeest herds spread out across the northern Serengeti, and it is here that the Mara River provides the migration with its most serious obstacle. The herds cross back and forth across the gushing waters, often resulting in dramatic clouds of dust, splashing and huge amounts of noise as the animals dash down embankments and dive into the water, often with huge awaiting Nile Crocodile ready to pounce.

Camp

Our cosy, secluded camp in the Serengeti National Park is located in a patch of woodland close to the Mara River and to some of the major the Wildebeest crossing points. It is open all year except in April and May, and comprises of 6 tents complete with en-suite bathrooms, enormous wrought-iron beds and Moroccan rugs, and it is simplistically elegant, intimate and comfortable.

Local Knowledge

Knowledge of a region and its inhabitants is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience. Our guides our locals who have an intimate familiarity with the landscape as well as wildlife behaviour to ensure maximum photographic opportunities.

Best of the Serengeti

Day 1: Arrival in Arusha and transfer to accommodation

Today is set aside as an arrival day in Arusha and after landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be collected and driven to your accommodations for the evening. Here you will meet the group along with the ORYX Photo Tour guide and host, who will discuss the finer points of the safari over dinner.

Day 2: Scheduled flight from Arusha Airport to Lamai

Today we depart for the northern Serengeti on a scheduled flight. Our routing will likely take us over the crater highlands and then over the vast Serengeti, passing close to the Mara River before touching down at Lamai Airstrip which is located north of the river. We have an hour’s drive to camp, with chances of encountering wildlife en route. After settling in and enjoying lunch, we will embark on afternoon game drive.

Days 3 to 6: Lamai area, Northern Serengeti

The Lamai area is a hidden gem of the Serengeti National Park. It is fairly remote, being located in the far north of the Serengeti and is realistically only reachable by way of flight. Hemmed in by the Isuria Escarpment to the west and the Kenyan border to the north, this is a slice of paradise indeed. A major focus of this Tanzania photo tour will be on so called “river crossings”, where herds of wildebeest (and sometimes zebra) cross the Mara River, typically in dramatic fashion. Larger crossings are accompanied by billowing dust clouds as the herds mill about on the river bank before deciding to cross the river, spray shooting into the air as the animals crash through the brown Mara River. The process is usually accompanied by a cacophony of braying and grunting wildebeest – the event is a visual as well as auditory extravaganza, and photographic opportunities can be superb! With luck, we may even witness the thrill of a reptilian hunt as enormous Nile Crocodiles grab unfortunate animals as they swim through the muddy waters. In the evenings, the camp fire is the perfect place to catch up with other guests over a refreshing beverage and discuss your days’ adventures as the sounds of the African night drift through the woodland surrounding camp.

Day 7: Scheduled flight Lamai to Kilimanjaro International Airport and depart

We sadly depart Lamai today on a scheduled flight for Kilimanjaro International Airport, where this Tanzania photo tour comes to an end.
