NEW TOUR

3 Jul 2020 – 11 Jul 2020

ORYX Photo Tours is proud to present a tour designed to take you to one of Africa’s premier areas for photographing predators in south central Africa. We welcome you to South Luangwa in Zambia.

The Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s safari gems and a destination that is sadly often overlooked in favour of its more celebrated neighbours in Tanzania, Kenya and Botswana. South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa – a claim which is not an overstatement.

It is through this 9,050km2 National Park that the great meandering Luangwa River runs, with its oxbow lagoons, tributaries, riverine woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, Thornicroft’s Giraffe (a subspecies endemic to the valley), along with a myriad of other mammals and birds.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Dubbed ``The Valley of the Leopard``, South Luangwa National Park has one of the highest densities of Leopard in the world. This is one natural area that still feels authentically wild and is relatively untouched by humans, providing a wonderfully unpredictable and exhilarating safari experience.

Month of Travel

Our Photo Tour takes place in July which is one of the best months to photograph wildlife. As this month falls under the Winter season, the dense bush is thinned out and water sources become more scarce. This makes wildlife viewing and photography easier as wildlife congregate around the larger water sources; the Luangwa River and lagoons.

Photographic Subjects

The concentration of wildlife in South Luangwa is some of the most dense in all of Africa. Huge concentrations of game including Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, Hippo and over 450 recorded species of birds. South Luangwa is home to the endemic subspecies Thornicroft’s Giraffe, Crawshay’s Zebra and Cookson’s Wildebeest, as well as the enchanting and endangered African Wild dog.

Handpicked Locations

The camps we have picked are sure to offer you a comprehensive and inspiring photographic exploration of South Luangwa. Both camps are situated in the Northern sector of the National Park but on opposite sides of the Luangwa River. One of our camps is based in the Nsefu Sector, with the other directly across from it. These two areas are in more remote sections which is away from the main tourist areas of the park and is best known for its excellent game viewing while simultaneously offering an incredible wilderness experience.

Guided Experience

Local knowledge of the region and its wildlife is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience. Combined with the photographic expertise of your ORYX Photo Tour Leader, and you are in for an adventure that will further fuel your excitement for photography and the destination.

Days 3 and 4: South Luangwa National Park

Our mornings start with an early breakfast feast where we then depart on our morning game drive which should see us back at camp roughly 4,5hours later depending on what sightings we have. Perched high above the Luangwa River, our camp offers impressive vistas of the river's many visitors below. Right from your suite, you can listen to the bellowing Hippos, African Fish Eagle and more. Our camp's main area overlooks the river and a permanent waterhole. Beneath the lounge is a wildlife hide that offers up-close views of the wildlife stopping by for a drink. Our morning and afternoon game drives are dedicated to exploring the wild areas around us as we seek the photographic opportunities that abound in South Luangwa. Our afternoon game drives go into the evening where night-photography comes out to play.

Day 5: Breakfast and morning game drive. Boat transfer across the Luangwa River to Nsefu Sector

Our morning starts as it has been since arriving in South Luangwa with a scrumptious breakfast and an exciting game drive to follow. Our game drive will continue as usual, but end with a boat ride across the Luangwa River where our next section of the tour commences. We will be taken on a game drive back to camp where we have time to settle in, have lunch and relax before our first afternoon game drive in the Nsefu Sector begins.

Days 6 to 8: South Luangwa National Park

Experts have dubbed South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason! The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is amongst the best in Africa – a feast for us and our lenses, and South Luangwa has to be one of the best places in the world for visitors who want an authentic African photo safari! Our camp is located in the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park, and this is an area that boasts some of the best game viewing in the region and due to its remote location, and it has very low numbers of general safari tourists, making the safari experience far purer and more enjoyable!

Day 9: Departure day

After breakfast and our last morning game drive, we will depart for our 2 hour transfer to Mfuwe International Airport. From here we will board our flight to Lusaka International Airport where our safari sadly comes to an end.
