ORYX Photo Tours is proud to present a tour designed to take you to one of Africa’s premier areas for photographing predators Zambia’s Luangwa Valley.

The Luangwa Valley is one of Africa’s safari gems and is a destination that is sadly often overlooked in favour of its more celebrated neighbours in Tanzania, Kenya and Botswana. South Luangwa National Park marks the end of the Great Rift Valley, one of the last remaining unspoilt wilderness areas and possibly the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa – a claim which is not an overstatement.

It is through this 9,050km2 National Park that the great meandering Luangwa River runs, with its oxbow lagoons, tributaries, riverine woodlands and large plains, all of which play host to huge concentrations of game including Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, Thornicroft’s Giraffe (a subspecies endemic to the valley) along with a myriad of other mammals and birds.

Why this Photo Tour is for You

Destination Allure

Dubbed ``The Valley of the Leopard``, South Luangwa National Park has one of the highest densities of Leopard in the world. This is one natural area that still feels authentically wild and is relatively untouched by humans, providing a wonderfully unpredictable and exhilarating safari experience.

Month of Travel

Our photo tour takes place at the start of spring, which is one of the best months to photograph wildlife. At the end of winter, the dense undergrowth has thinned out appreciably, and as the seasons shift from winter to spring, temperatures rise, drying out smaller water sources. This makes wildlife viewing and photography easier as animals congregate around the larger water sources that remain, namely along the Luangwa River and some of its lagoons.

Photographic Subjects

The concentration of wildlife in South Luangwa is some of the densest in all of Africa. Species include Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Leopard, Lion, African Wild Dog and Hippo. South Luangwa is home to the endemic subspecies Thornicroft’s Giraffe, Crawshay’s Zebra and Cookson’s Wildebeest.

Handpicked Locations

Our camps have been picked to offer you an inspiring photographic exploration to 2 key areas in South Luangwa that are well known for their wildlife density and experiences. Our first camp is beside the Luangwa River in the heart of South Luangwa National Park, while our second camp is in the exclusive Nsefu Sector. These two areas are in more remote sections which is away from the main tourist areas of the park and is best known for its excellent game viewing while simultaneously offering an incredible wilderness experience.

Guided Experience

Local knowledge of the region and its wildlife is key to crafting the ultimate photography tour experience. Combined with the photographic expertise of your ORYX Photo Tour Leader, and you are in for an adventure that will further fuel your excitement for photography and the destination.

Days 7 to 9: South Luangwa National Park

Some experts have dubbed South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason! The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its oxbow lagoons is amongst the best in Africa – a feast for us and our lenses! It is superb for Leopard and Lion, and the meandering Luangwa River often has good numbers of herbivores visiting to drink from its waters. Nsefu boasts some of the best game viewing in the region and due to its remote location, it has low numbers of general tourists, making the safari experience here “purer” and more enjoyable! South Luangwa has to be one of the best places in the world for visitors who want an authentic African photo safari.
